Pilots flying into icy weather conditions have a new set of directives on how to recognize the danger and how to escape it. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a series of 18 airworthiness directives affecting 29 types of airplanes. The regulations require pilots to look for telltale signs of problems, such as ice accumulating on the side window, the wing or the propeller hub cover. If icing is spotted, the pilot must change altitude or course to get away from the conditions causing icing.
