Preliminary School District Budget Would Restore Salaries

Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. Sid Thompson presented a $4.4-billion preliminary budget Monday intended to improve educational programs and restore teachers’ salaries.
Several improvements hinge on money expected after finalization of the state budget, including a statewide cost-of-living raise and $34.8 million arrived at in a settlement between the state and the California Teachers Assn. over education funding.
“We think this is a very realistic budget and a positive budget if you compare it to two years ago,” said Henry Jones, the district’s budget manager.
About $21 million from the settlement will restore teachers’ salaries, cut in 1992, to 1990-91 levels, Jones said.
The district also is scheduled to receive a 3.34% increase to help boost several programs, including summer school, child development and special education.
