Graduate Student Gets BPW Scholarship

A Cal State Northridge graduate student has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from a Washington, D.C., foundation to help her earn a teaching credential.
Michele Betton, who is deaf and a mother of three children, plans to earn her credential in special education for the deaf and hearing-impaired. The money was awarded by the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation, an organization that provides scholarships and fellowships to women over 30 who return to college as reentry students.
Previously, the North Hollywood resident has worked with deaf children in the Los Angeles and Burbank school districts and at the Tripod School for the Deaf in Burbank. Betton received a bachelor’s degree in English from CSUN, where she has also worked as a tutor.
“I feel with my insight and experiences, as well as my ambition, I would be able to make a difference and hopefully be a part of a new trend in providing quality education for deaf children,” she said.
