Bridge Funding Plan Goes Before Council

After 11 years of wrangling and discussion over the construction of a new and larger Rose Avenue bridge, the Oxnard City Council is expected tonight to approve a financing plan for the final phase of the project.
The expansion, which is expected to cost $16.6 million, will be financed mostly through a special assessment district that includes taxes on surrounding businesses and landowners. The city will contribute nearly 40% of the cost.
The two-lane Rose Avenue bridge will be expanded to six lanes. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 1997.
Residents have complained that the two-lane overpass is too small, causing bottlenecks and creating a hazardous area for children.
Today’s hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m.
