The thin crescent moon is five degrees to the right of Jupiter tonight. Both are in the northern part of Sagittarius. They set together after 8 p.m. Jupiter is 2,300 times as distant as the moon. Three of Jupiter’s four largest moons- each of which is as big or bigger than our moon- are visible tonight through a small telescope. This evening Jupiter’s fourth moon, Io, is casting its shadow on Jupiter’s clouds, and the shadow appears as a small black dot.
