Crowd Confronts Police After Killing

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A large crowd threw bottles and taunted Tampa police after two white officers shot and killed a black man suspected of dealing drugs, six weeks after riots followed a police shooting in nearby St. Petersburg. Officers wore riot gear after Friday night’s shooting, but officials downplayed the tense situation. The city was calm. Matthew Mills, 34, was shot during a struggle for an officer’s gun, police said. They would not confirm witness accounts that Mills was already subdued when he was shot.
