* The mallady (pun intended) described by Doug Kaplan hits home (“Overmalled, Underschooled,” Commentary, Dec. 9). While there are more than 30 fancy hotels, mega-retail and lush golf courses within 10 miles of my home, the Quonset hut where I teach mathematics is a shameful environment for the students and teachers alike.
Kaplan’s vivid analysis shows how political boundaries formed by cities, counties and school districts, when combined with California tax codes, work to the detriment of education.
