Having suffered through topsy-turvy seasons, Stanford (6-5) and Michigan State (6-5) see today’s game as a good way to prove that their programs are making progress.

Michigan State Coach Nick Saban said his team has set its sights on winning a seventh game this season, which would better last season’s 6-5-1 finish.

Stanford struggled early, posting a 2-5 record, then swept through the last four games, including a 42-21 victory over California to earn a postseason invitation.

Stanford quarterback Chad Hutchinson completed 73 of 114 passes for 824 yards and six touchdowns in the final four games.
