Chinese officials pledge to take following steps by 2000 to reduce air pollution:
* Build big power plants with high efficiency and low pollution emissions; close small, less efficient ones.
* Add pollution control equipment at existing power plants, bringing them close to international standards.
* Cooperate with other countries to expand use of clean-coal technology.
* Seek more foreign investment for efficient uses of energy with lower pollution.
* Enforce pollution laws.
