Nevada’s Southern California Connection Beats Pepperdine

MALIBU — Alemany High graduate Andy Dominique, a senior whose two home runs spoiled Pepperdine’s opener Friday, is one of seven Nevada players from the Valley area. Several had a hand in the Wolfpack’s 8-6 victory.
Left-hander Clint Marcus, a junior who attended Faith Baptist and El Camino Real highs and Valley College, was the winning pitcher after allowing one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Marcus entered the game with two on and none out in the fifth, and struck out Randy Wolf, a former high school teammate.
Marcus tired in the seventh, and bailing him out of a two-on, two-out jam was right-hander Jay Kenney, a freshman from Westlake High.
“Southern California is our main recruiting base,” Nevada Coach Gary Fowler said.
Leadoff batter Justin Martin, who singled and drove in a run Friday, is a sophomore from El Camino Real. Center fielder David Brown, a senior from Royal, hit a single and scored two runs.
Other area players include Joel Orme, a sophomore right-hander from Chaminade , and first baseman Glen Carson, a senior from Notre Dame.
Carson probably will redshirt this year because he recently underwent stomach surgery to combat Crohn’s disease.
