UCI Gets Past Idaho in Women’s Basketball

Leticia Oseguera made two key plays in the final 40 seconds to help UC Irvine beat visiting Idaho, 65-62, Sunday in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game.

Oseguera made a layup with 40 seconds left to put UC Irvine ahead, 63-62. Megan Stafford made two free throws with 20 seconds left to give UC Irvine a 65-62 lead. Oseguera then blocked a shot with two seconds left.

Oseguera finished with a team-high 16 points as well as 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Shannon Andres added 12 points and Char-Pei Chen had eight points and 10 rebounds for UC Irvine (10-9, 5-3).

Alli Nieman had a game-high 25 points for for Idaho (9-10, 4-3).

In other Big West Conference games:

Boise State 55, Cal State Fullerton 52--Guard Andrea Thieme scored a game-high 23 points for host Cal State Fullerton (6-12, 1-6). Heidi Umthun made two free throws with four seconds left to clinch the game for Boise State (7-11, 5-2).

Long Beach State 88, North Texas 75--Toby Metoyer scored 19 points and had nine rebounds and Adara Newidouski added 18 points and 10 rebounds for host Long Beach State (7-12, 4-4).

Aimee Periolat added nine points and 11 assists for Long Beach.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, California 1--Host UC Irvine, ranked 54th, won four of six singles matches in beating No. 23 California. Steve Tallakson of UCI beat Alez Sueur, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and teammate Thomas Bohun beat David Sutton, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
