Tarzan’s Hangout

Regarding “My Body Lies Over the Ocean” (Weekend Escape, Jan. 19): I too grew up in Pacific Beach. There is something that happened at the Plunge that only a handful of people know about.

Sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s, my sister and I went swimming in the Plunge. All of a sudden, a voice came over the loudspeaker asking everyone to get out of the pool. Then some men came out and set up deck chairs.

The next thing we knew, John Wayne and his family came out and sat down. Next, Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) came out and proceeded to do some wonderful dives off the high board. He did this for some time, and then everyone just packed up and left!

I guess that Wayne just wanted to see what Weissmuller could do.

I was a big Tarzan fan, and that was one of the highlights of my young childhood.
