U.S., Denmark Team Up Against China

GENEVA — Undeterred by political threats and economic muscle, the United States and a group of European countries submitted a resolution Thursday criticizing China’s human rights record.
Underlining the disarray in the European Union over the issue, Germany, France, Spain and Italy were notably missing from the European co-sponsors.
Instead, Denmark--encouraged by Washington--agreed to lead the way, presenting the resolution to the U.N. Human Rights Commission, which is meeting in Geneva.
China reacted angrily, warning the United States and Denmark that the action would damage relations.
The resolution will be put to a vote by the 53-nation U.N. human rights watchdog next week. It was co-signed by the Netherlands, Britain, Austria, Portugal, Finland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, the United States, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
