* The reflection by Lea Fuchs Chayen (Commentary, April 16) on the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps described the deliverance and charity shown to the prisoners by U.S. troops--as long as the victims were heterosexual.
Gay men consigned to the death camps, distinguished by a pink triangle on their uniforms, were rounded up by the Allies and sent off to German prisons to continue their sentences. Even today, gay and lesbian Americans are still waiting for our government and our fellow citizens to admit that those precious words, “You are free,” should also apply to us here and now.
