Nyberg Named Scholar-Athlete of Year

Justin Nyberg of Irvine High and Annie Maxwell of Santa Barbara High have been selected the 1996-97 CIF male and female scholar-athletes of the year from the Southern Section, the state office announced.

Nyberg, who has a 4.02 grade-point average, was the Sea View League’s cross-country champion and finished eighth in the state Division I finals last season. He currently has the county’s second-fastest time in the mile. He will attend Princeton this fall.

Maxwell, a volleyball player, has a 4.63 GPA.

Both will be honored in ceremonies at the state capitol in Sacramento on June 5 and at the state track finals June 6-7, also in Sacramento.
