Statue of Suffragists at Capitol Rotunda

A 7 1/2-ton statue of three suffragists who fought for the right of women to vote was moved to the Capitol Rotunda after 75 years in the building’s basement crypt. The statue of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott will be the first in the rotunda to feature women. In 1920, women won the right to vote with passage of the 19th Amendment. Congress gave approval for the statue to be relocated earlier this year. Black women’s groups are now protesting the move, saying the statue should include black abolitionist Sojourner Truth.
