Ruling Party Set to Win, Returns Show

The ruling Golkar party routed all challengers in parliamentary elections marred by violence, early returns showed. Official returns are not expected until next week, but Interior Ministry figures showed Golkar had an overwhelming lead. A Golkar victory makes it all but certain that the new legislature and other officials will elect President Suharto, 75, to a seventh five-year term next year.
