Funds for 10 New Jobs in $670-Million Budget Plan

A $670-million city budget that would include funds to add 10 positions and $500,000 to improve neighborhoods could win approval Tuesday.

The spending plan reflects five goals that the City Council set: to ensure public safety, build the economy, enhance neighborhoods, maximize assets and maintain infrastructure.

In a letter to the council, the Budget Advisory Commission, which has reviewed the proposal for fiscal 1997-98, said it “emphasizes the enhancement and protection of neighborhoods through continued high police presence, funds for neighborhood capital improvements and neighborhood programs.”

A 2 p.m. public hearing will include presentations by Police Department, Fire Department, Public Works, Public Utilities, Community Development, Planning and Community Services officials. The public will be able to ask questions and make comments.

Council members said they expect to adopt the budget at a 5 p.m. session.

The general-fund budget is $141 million, up about 2% to cover labor-related expenses in the Police and Fire departments, plus an increase for the Planning Department as Walt Disney Co. proceeds with plans for a second Anaheim theme park, officials said.

Increased revenue is projected from the so-called hotel bed tax, sales taxes and motor vehicle license fees.
