Webb’s ‘Switch’ Comes On

It takes an on-and-off switch to play in the defensive line, the transition from passive to aggressive supposedly coming with the step across the boundary of a football field. Sometimes, though, the switch never quite goes on and you end up with a big, strong guy surrounded by coaches shaking their heads.

Josh Webb, a gentle giant at 6 feet 7, 258 pounds, has sometimes had heads shaking at UCLA, which is why there were smiles all around when he got into a bit of a scrap with offensive linemen Kris Farris and Andy Meyers in a recent workout.

He recoils at the “too nice” tag, saying, “I’m aggressive out there,” but acknowledges there is a danger of “being left behind” as coaches set up playing rotations.

The Bruins can use his size, as well as that of his twin Micah, who also has “switch” problems.
