Safety Components International Inc.: The Costa Mesa manufacturer of automotive air bags and auto parts posted a profit of $1.4 million, or 29 cents a share, for its fiscal 1998 first fiscal quarter, a 68% increase from the $853,000, or 17 cents a share, reported a year earlier. Sales for the quarter ended June 30 rose 70% to $27.6 million from $16.2 million. The company’s earnings included six weeks of revenue from a recent acquisition, Valentec International Corp.
