Illegal Sterilizations Since ’92 Reported

Surgeons in the public health system have illegally sterilized at least 1,045 retarded women and girls since 1992, a government-commissioned report said. The Health Ministry called the figure overstated, saying the true number of cases is one-fourth or one-fifth that. In 1992, Australia’s High Court made such sterilizations illegal if not medically required, unless permission was granted by a court or tribunal.
