Long Beach has won a national award for an innovative computer program that speeds the historically arduous task of redrawing City Council districts to be completed in weeks instead of months.
The city was awarded the Public Technology Achievement Award for creating the computer application. Public Technology is a Washington-based research organization whose aim is to bring technology to local and state government.
“The application exceeded our expectations across the board,” said Director of General Services Robert Metzger. “We are saving staff time and money.”
The city’s charter requires redistricting of the nine council districts every five years, he said.
