Ex-Secret Service Agent Appointed Police Chief

The city has a new police chief who is accustomed to being near the halls of power as a veteran Secret Service agent who protected Presidents Carter and Reagan.
King Davis, 50, will take over the 20-member Sierra Madre Police Department Jan. 5, said City Administrator John Davidson.
“I want to come home,” said the former Pasadena resident. “I was assigned in Los Angeles . . . from 1984 to 1989. I have always wanted to be a police chief and there is not a better place to do it.”
Davis is married to Miriam Hernandez, a Washington, D.C., television reporter, and they own a home in Pasadena. Sierra Madre selected him from a field of 29 candidates, officials said.
The 21-year veteran of the Secret Service is currently in charge of a narcotics task force in the nation’s capital.
In 1979, Davis was assigned to the Presidential Protective Division, he said. From 1982 to 1984 he was in charge of training of the service’s counter-assault teams and then served five years in Los Angeles as a supervisor on the agency’s counterfeit squad. Davis’ resume also lists him as a colonel in the Army Reserve.
