Needing More Space, Police Apprehend Store Next Door

To relieve the crowded conditions at Police Department headquarters on Commonwealth Avenue, the city has agreed to purchase the Thompson Furniture Store next door. The price: $1 million.
The property totals 38,500 square feet, including 22,000 square feet of buildings. The store is vacant. Police Chief Patrick E. McKinley said officers will start using the parking lot immediately and will convert a building in the rear into storage space for evidence, files and records.
“We are bursting at the seams at the Police Department,” McKinley said, adding that extra space has been needed for some time.
City officials said they are finalizing the sale and planning to conduct a study on how best to use the facility. Ultimately, McKinley said, he would like to see the front building changed so that it matches the Spanish architecture of the police headquarters.
The study, which will address that issue, is expected to conclude within six to eight months, officials said.
