Quake Flurry Hits Off Eureka Coast

A flurry of earthquakes, the strongest of magnitude 4.4, occurred Thursday six or seven miles off the Humboldt County coast about 40 miles southwest of Eureka, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Neither damage nor injuries were reported in the temblors along a sparsely populated section of the coast in the so-called Triple Junction area where three massive tectonic plates come together.
This is one of the most active seismic zones in California. The latest series of quakes began Monday with a 4.1, 11 miles off Punta Gorda. The 4.4 jolt Thursday, at 1:19 p.m., was six miles off Punta Gorda.
Scientists said there also were three 3.3 quakes Thursday afternoon.
