Tighter Security at Prison Promised

Britain promised to tighten security at Maze prison, where republican guerrilla prisoners scaled rooftops over the weekend, reached a wing holding their sectarian foes and killed Protestant paramilitary leader Billy Wright with smuggled guns. The pledge was made after an emergency meeting of Britain’s secretary for Northern Ireland, Marjorie “Mo” Mowlam, and security chiefs. Three men charged with Wright’s murder appeared in court at Lisburn amid heavy security.
