Arriving Soon: a ‘New’ D.C. Airport

Visitors to Washington, D.C., will find a vastly changed and modernized National Airport starting July 27.
Most of the 13 airlines serving the downtown airport will move to a new, 1-million-square-foot North Terminal; arrival and departure areas will be separated onto different levels; new restaurants and stores will debut; and arriving passengers will be able to step directly into a Metro subway station.
The $400-million project began in 1987, and parts of it will continue into 1998. The architect, Cesar Pelli, also designed the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. The new terminal includes 30 floor medallions, murals and other works by artists including Frank Stella.
The old 1941 terminal will continue to operate, but will handle fewer airlines.
