Peetz, Janov Help Put Golden West in Final

Mike Peetz scored seven goals in two games and Peter Janov added six to help eight-time defending champion Golden West advance to the championship final of the state men’s water polo finals Friday.

Golden West defeated Citrus, 12-6, in the semifinal game and Merced, 14-3, in the opening round at Ohlone College.

Golden West, undefeated at 36-0, plays West Valley in the final at 3:45 p.m. today.

In the state women’s water polo tournament:

Golden West and Orange Coast advance--Both teams won both their games to advance to the championship final.

Golden West, ranked first in the state, beat Grossmont, 9-6, in the semifinal game and routed Sierra, 15-1, in its first-round game. Orange Coast beat Merced, 6-5, in a semifinal game, and edged Modesto, 6-5, in the first round.

The Pirates, ranked second in the state, will play top-ranked Golden West (35-19) at 2:30 p.m. at Ohlone College.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Fullerton 2, Cypress 1--Jimmy Oakden and Andy Wirz scored for Fullerton (9-10-3, 7-3-2), which qualified for the playoffs.

Irvine Valley 4, Riverside 3--Irvine Valley’s (16-5-5, 6-3-3) Felix Hernandez scored two goals, including the game-winner.

Orange Coast 2, Golden West 1--Nelson Coronado and Juan Escobar scored for Orange Coast (4-11-5, 4-6-2) in its victory over Golden West (2-15-5, 1-11).
