USC Too Much for Pepperdine

Nicole Sanderson of Pepperdine had 16 kills and Anna Witkowski had 14 kills and six blocks, but USC defeated the Waves, 15-8, 15-5, 10-15, 15-12, in a nonconference women’s volleyball match Wednesday night at USC.

Karen Benkovsky had 12 kills and 17 digs and Jamie Hill had 10 kills and four blocks for No. 14-ranked Pepperdine (14-2). The Waves had a .088 hitting percentage.

Jennifer Kessy had 22 kills and six digs for No. 5 USC (14-2).

The Trojans also received 14 kills, seven digs and 11 blocks from Jasmina Marinkovic.

USC had 20 team blocks to Pepperdine’s 10.

In another women’s volleyball match:

Chapman d. Cal Lutheran, 15-11, 15-4, 15-5--Marianne Moll had 12 kills and nine digs for the Regals (3-7) in a nonconference match at Chapman (11-5).

Sara Fristad had nine kills and eight digs, and Kelly Mongini had five blocks for Cal Lutheran--which was playing without its top hitter, freshman Lauren McCartin.

She has a sore back.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Pepperdine 1, UC Santa Barbara 0--Jennifer Peterson scored off a pass from former Moorpark High standout Tracey Milburn 14 minutes into overtime, lifting the Waves (4-9) to a nonconference victory over the Gauchos (3-10-1) at Pepperdine.

Nicole Tourney made one save and Sumon Nicole stopped three shots to combine for the shutout.

Cal Lutheran 6, Whittier 0--Alia Khan scored two goals and Kim Holeman added her team-high 13th goal (the 40th in her CLU career) to pace the Regals (11-3, 8-0) to a SCIAC home win.

Cal Lutheran is ranked 13th in the nation at the NCAA Division III level, and is 78-1-1 in six and three-fourths seasons in the SCIAC.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 27, Pierce 7--Brian Ellis scored five goals and Mike Scarcelli and David Siminski each had four for the Monarchs in a Western State Conference match at Pierce.

Peter Driscoll had seven saves for Valley (15-7, 3-2).

Mike Kaplan had four goals for Pierce.

Ventura 7, Cuesta 6--Bill Bruininga scored four goals for the Pirates (19-4, 5-0) in the Western State Conference win at Cuesta.

Ventura had 14 team steals in the game and goalie Curtis Tolmie had nine saves.
