Rookie Survives, but It Isn’t Over

Clipper rookie forward Maurice Taylor raised both arms and screamed when the team broke training camp Monday in La Jolla.

“I was so happy when [Coach Bill Fitch] told us that we get to go back to L.A. because I finally get to sleep in my own bed,” said Taylor, the Clippers’ first-round draft pick from Michigan. “I haven’t really seen my place yet, so tonight is going to be kind of fun.

“It was a yell of relief because I didn’t think I was going to make it through camp.”

The Clippers, who play an exhibition game against the Atlanta Hawks tonight at the Sports Arena, will continue two-a-day practices at their Carson practice facility until their regular-season opener at Phoenix on Oct. 31.

Guard James Robinson, who has a foot injury, and forward Loy Vaught, who has a back problem, were examined by team physician Tony Daly but there was no immediate indication when they might return.
