Bush’s Son to Run for Governor Again

Jeb Bush, son of former President Bush, filed as a Republican candidate for governor, three years after losing Florida’s closest gubernatorial election ever. The real estate developer from Miami lost the 1994 governor’s race to incumbent Democrat Lawton Chiles by only about 80,000 votes out of 4.2 million cast. His elder brother George W. Bush won Texas’ governorship on the same day. Florida’s constitution bars Chiles from seeking a third term. A Bush supporter filed notification with Secretary of State Sandra Mortham, clearing the way for Bush to start raising the roughly $10 million it is expected to cost to campaign for the 14 months until the November 1998 race. Florida political analysts consider Bush the favorite to replace Chiles.
