Coach Doug Case’s Rancho Alamitos teams don’t often play Division I schools, but this year he had good reason to schedule a powerhouse such as Esperanza. He has four legitimate Division I college prospects in Vickers, Blanco, Young and tight end Nu Atuatasi--and he has eight players back on offense and defense. “Years when we’ve had good teams, we ask ourselves, ‘Could our teams have played the better schools?’ ” Case said. “Well, you never know unless you take that chance.” The Vaqueros’ biggest worry will be matching up with Esperanza’s offensive line, which averages 290 pounds.
