Winter begins officially at 5:56 p.m. Monday. This is the moment--called the winter solstice--when the sun, in its apparent path around Earth, reaches its southernmost point in the sky. It is also the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, although the length of the day changes little during December.
