* How they got here: It’s difficult to believe considering their records, but both these teams are wild-card entrants.
* 1998 meeting: On Nov. 1, Green Bay defeated San Francisco, 36-22. Packer quarterback Brett Favre passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns and Antonio Freeman caught seven passes for a career-high 193 yards as the Packers beat the 49ers for the fifth consecutive time. 49er quarterback Steve Young, 0-8 against the Packers in his career, passed for 186 yards and one touchdown.
* About Green Bay: The Packers have not played very well in the weeks leading up to the playoffs, including Sunday’s 16-13 win over Chicago. “I was hoping for a little more momentum,” Coach Mike Holmgren said.
* About San Francisco: Perhaps Coach Steve Mariucci said it best after Sunday’s victory over St. Louis, which meant the 49ers were able to stay home instead of traveling to Green Bay: “We had to win this game to avoid going back to 38-below. . . . Next week against Green Bay is step two.”
