Cargo Train Fire Disrupts Metrolink Service

PALMDALE — Railroad ties carried on a flatbed rail car caught fire Monday afternoon, disrupting service on at least one Lancaster-bound commuter train, authorities said.
No one was injured, authorities said.
The fire began about 4:30 p.m. on a Union Pacific Railroad train, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported. The train was stopped at Sierra Highway near Avenue P while firefighters worked to put out the flames.
Northbound Metrolink commuters on the 3:45 p.m. train out of downtown Los Angeles’ Union Station were stopped at the Acton station. Starting about 6 p.m. fire officials allowed Metrolink trains through because they travel on a parallel track, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Schram.
Authorities believe the fire started as a result of friction due to the way the ties were stacked.
