Congressional Panel Supports Funding for Dredging at Port

A congressional subcommittee has recommended earmarking $63 million of the energy and water appropriations bill for fiscal year 1999 for dredging at the port of Los Angeles, a spokesman for Rep. Jane Harman (D-Torrance), said Thursday.
The recommendation is included in a bill that would allocate funds to the Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Energy and several other federal agencies. The dredging is part of the port’s Pier 400 Project, a new container terminal at the port.
The bill must be ratified by the Appropriations Committee and approved by the House of Representatives. It must also be reconciled with a similar spending bill in the Senate and signed into law by the president.
