* There is a shortage of lifeboats.
* There is mass confusion aboard the ship.
* The men are fighting among themselves as to who deserves to be saved.
* The officers and the builder are refusing to take the blame for thinking the ship is unsinkable.
* To make the comparison complete, the captain and the builder must go down with the ship.
