Glendale Must Now Sit and Wait for Fate

For the second day in a row, Glendale needed a victory to sew up the Western State Conference Southern Division baseball championship--and lost.

Glendale fell to Oxnard, 11-8, in an interdivision game Friday at Stengel Field.

The Vaqueros (24-13, 16-10), who have completed their regular-season schedule, need a Valley victory over Pierce today to claim the championship.

With a victory today, Pierce (15-10 in conference) can tie Glendale for first and would advance to the state regionals because it won the season series with Glendale.

In other college baseball games:

Valley 8, Canyons 6--The Cougars, who lost for the third consecutive time, were eliminated from playoff consideration in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Valley.

Vic Palomares had three hits, including a three-run double in a four-run third inning, for Valley (12-24, 9-16).

Azusa Pacific 12, The Master’s 10--After 4 hours, 27 minutes and four lead changes, the Mustangs lost an NAIA Far West Sectional game at Azusa Pacific.

Ty Sager had three hits and three RBIs for the Mustangs (34-9), who played Southern California College in an elimination game late Friday.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Cleveland 72, Granada Hills 28--Malinda Malone won the 100 meters in 12.8 seconds, the 200 in 26.4 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 10 inches for host Cleveland (5-2, 5-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference meet.

The boys’ and girls’ mile relay was not contested after a 17-year-old boy was shot outside the meet. [Details in B Section]

Reseda 72, Monroe 46--Chinyere Edwards of Reseda ran the 220 in a personal-best 25.9 seconds and won four events for Reseda (5-2, 5-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference meet at Reseda.

BOYS’ TRACK

El Camino Real 64, Taft 63--Ira Gold, Art Lucero and Bobbie Stevens all cleared 11-6 in the pole vault to lead a sweep of the first three places for host El Camino Real (6-1, 6-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference meet, forcing a three-way tie for the conference championship between Taft, El Camino Real and Birmingham.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Calabasas 11, Moorpark 7--Braden Aftergood won three sets at No. 1 singles and Calabasas (15-4, 7-0) clinched at least a tie of the Frontier League title at Moorpark.

Van Nuys 23, Westchester 6 1/2--Vincent Hsu lost only two games at No. 1 singles for the host Wolves (13-2) in a City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal victory.

Cleveland 15 1/2, Fairfax 14--Michael Hale and Franklin Ahn swept at No. 2 doubles for Cleveland (10-5) in a City Section 3-A quarterfinal playoff victory at fourth-seeded Fairfax (13-1).

St. Bonaventure 15, Bishop Diego 3--No. 1 singles player Mike Marquez (36-0) remained unbeaten, winning two sets by 6-0 scores and another one by default, for host St. Bonaventure as the Seraphs (12-0, 7-0) captured their first Tri-Valley League championship.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Littlerock d. Lancaster, 15-10, 15-12, 15-13--Chris Gorny compiled a triple-double with 17 kills, 13 blocks and 11 digs for the Lobos (12-2, 7-1) in a Golden League victory at Lancaster.

Crespi d. Notre Dame, 15-5, 15-8, 7-15, 15-5--Marcin Jagoda had 14 kills and Crespi (13-1, 10-1) clinched at least a share of first place in the Mission League at Notre Dame.

COLLEGE SWIMMING

Community College State Championships--Four Ventura swimmers won state titles on the second day of the three-day event at Ventura.

Patrick Nygren won the men’s 400 individual medley in 4:05.95 and swam a leg in Ventura’s 800 relay team that placed third.

Ventura’s Marissa Roarty won the women’s 200 medley in 2:09.22, Loriann Turner won the women’s 50 breastroke in 30.60 and Kathy Macropol won the women’s 50 backstroke in 27.29.
