With all the impressive resumes found on the Pepperdine roster, it was left to Marc McDowell to prop up the Waves in a 71-58 victory over UC Irvine before 1,237 at Malibu.

McDowell made a three-point basket after the Anteaters (0-1) pulled within seven midway through the second half. It started a 7-0 run that gave Pepperdine (2-0) its largest lead, 55-41.

McDowell, a 6-foot-7 senior, put the Anteaters away when he made a eight-foot turn-around for a 65-56 lead with 1 minute 44 seconds left.

McDowell had 11 points in the first half, scoring nine of Pepperdine’s 11 points during one stretch.

“People forget that Marc was honorable mention All-West Coast Conference two years ago,” Coach Lorenzo Romar said.

Marek Ondera had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Irvine.
