Tom Bradley

In 1977, as chair of our school’s booster club, it fell to me to organize and publicize our fund-raising events. That year, we had a whopping 400-family yard sale--in the schoolyard. I sent letters inviting all the local politicians, from council to congressional representatives, as well as to all of the then-hot TV stars.

The only person to respond that weekend was His Honor. With only his driver, and not a press person in sight, Tom Bradley wandered the aisles smiling, talking and looking. He eventually bought a 35-cent gadget left over from the gas crisis. (Maybe he knew another one was coming!) I will always remember the class he showed.

We raised more than $6,000 that weekend, a tidy sum for us. Thank you, Mayor Bradley, for all your support.
