Joel Lautenschleger began serving his first term as mayor a week after the county declared bankruptcy in 1994. The City Council unanimously elected him again Tuesday to lead the city through the year 2000.

“I hope this year will be much easier,” Lautenschleger said, laughing. “But now half the county is on water rationing. I just don’t know.”

The council bid thanks to outgoing mayor Cindy Greengold.

Councilman Randal Bressette, who was unanimously elected as the new mayor pro tem, credited Greengold for making people feel at home and listened to.
