Confessed Bomber Sentenced to Death

A Cuban court sentenced Salvadoran Raul Ernesto Cruz Leon, 27, to die by firing squad after he confessed to a series of bomb attacks against the Communist-run island’s tourism industry in 1997 in which Italian tourist Fabio di Celmo died. The execution sentence will be appealed automatically to the Supreme Court and must be ratified by Cuba’s ruling Council of State before it can be carried out. The government of El Salvador appealed to Cuba to stop the execution.
