Robert Bruss’ advice to get a proof of mailing receipt from the post office will not work. The payer needs proof not of mailing date but of delivery date, so he needs the more expensive certified mail.
In fact, the mortgage service may say that the payment is late if it does not arrive the morning of the due date. Only income taxes and DMV registrations accept the postmark as proof of date of payment.
