Prime Minister Pandeli Majko resigned, appealing to Albanians to avoid the cycle of political violence and confrontation that cost his impoverished nation “a very high economic and political price.” Majko lost the Socialist Party leadership to his predecessor, Fatos Nano, two weeks ago, and his resignation was accepted by President Rexhep Mejdani. Majko was widely praised in the West for his stewardship during the crisis in neighboring Kosovo.
