Rebels Reportedly Kill 13 in Police, Army

Marxist rebels, who have stepped up attacks since Washington approved more than $1 billion in military aid for Colombia, killed at least 13 security force members in the latest clashes across the country, officials said. Police and military officials said the worst of the bloodshed was in Narino province in the southwest, where the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, gunned down 11 police officers and wounded 17 others Monday. Two soldiers also died Monday in a firefight with FARC commandos in Magdalena province in the north. Meanwhile, the National Liberation Army, another rebel group, freed a hostage seized in a plane hijacking last year.
