The Alabama march of 2,500 people waving the flag the Confederacy and demanding secession from the Union is an incomprehensible sight (March 5). A defeated people longing for myths and victories of the past. Are they America’s Serbian equivalents, hungering for the past glory of Kosovo? Or are they merely treasonous citizens insulting the freedoms of America? Like the Europeans, rich in culture, the South is trapped by its history.
