On the night of Nov. 17, North Americans may witness a very brief meteor shower when the Earth passes through a narrow swarm of debris

shed by a comet more than a century ago. Face east and watch for “shooting stars” during the 20 minutes before midnight. If we are lucky, we may see a dozen or more meteors radiating from the approximate direction of the moon (whose bright light will wash out all but the brightest meteors).
