Gore Voter Hotline Suffers a Hang-Up

Associated Press

Got a problem with your vote?

Don’t call the Al Gore voter hotline. It wasn’t taking calls from people in Florida, or elsewhere, on Saturday.

“I’m sorry we were unable to record your message, please try again later,” a recording said.

Overburdened voicemail box? Busy circuits? Or just another election bug? The Democrats can’t say for certain what happened, but pointed to heavy volume as a possible explanation.

“We had lots and lots and lots of calls,” probably thousands, said Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Jenny Backus.

The Bush campaign hasn’t set up a phone line specifically for voters.
