Study Finds Low Morale in Ranks of Los Angeles Police

WESTWOOD — Burnout and low morale in the Los Angeles Police Department have increased, according to a preliminary UCLA-USC study released Monday.
The study found that the number of officers who said they were “burned out” from their job increased from 19% in 1996 to 27% today, officials said.
The study also said that 57% of the officers interviewed would leave the department if given a chance, and 80% feared being punished for an honest mistake.
More than 1,000 officers were interviewed for the study, “The Strain of Change: Voices of Los Angeles Police Officers.” The complete study will be published next year.
