Marbley Clears 6-11 1/2; Tustin Tops Santa Ana

Tustin senior Alex Marbley cleared 6 feet 11 1/2 inches in the high jump Thursday, the best mark by a county jumper since 1997, helping the Tillers defeat Santa Ana, 85-45, in a Golden West League track and field meet.

Marbley made the height, the sixth best in county history, on his first try. His previous best was 6-10.

Denny Casupanan established a county-leading mark in the long jump for the Tillers, leaping 22-5.

Casupanan also won the 100 (10.7), Duane Nix won the 200 (22.5), 400 (52.2) and triple jump (41- 1/2) and Michael Colby won the 110 hurdles (15.0) and 300 hurdles (42.2) for the Tillers.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 88, El Dorado 43--Mike Hicks won the triple jump with a mark of 43-0 and the 110 hurdles in 16.0 for Cypress (3-0 in league).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 80 1/2, Savanna 49 1/2--County leader Keinan Briggs set a school record of 44-11 in the triple jump for the Tigers (4-0, 3-0).

In the Sea View League:

Aliso Niguel 103, Laguna Hills 33--Mike Mudge won the 400 (53.2), 110 hurdles (15.1) and 300 hurdles (39.9) for visiting Aliso Niguel (2-0 in league).

Newport Harbor 82 1/2, Woodbridge 53 1/2--John Peschelt won the 400 (52.7) and 800 (2:02.3), Dan Moyer won the 110 hurdles (15.5) and 300 hurdles (41.4) and David Sprenger was first in the long jump (20-4) and triple jump (41-10) for the Sailors (3-0 in league).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 121, Trabuco Hills 10--Jacob Gustafsson won the 800 in 1:59 and Scott Bennett won the shotput (52-7 1/2) and discus (145-8) for the Diablos (3-0 in league).

Tom Rodriguez (200, 400) and Robert Sickles (long jump, triple jump) also won two events.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 97, Huntington Beach 30--Seven athletes threw 150 feet or better in the discus, including six by Esperanza.

Huntington Beach junior Brian Ruziecki, the county leader in the discus, won with a throw of 180-5. Ruziecki also won the shotput with a county-leading 57-1 1/2.

In Century League girls’ track and field:

Santa Ana Valley 78, Villa Park 53--Crystal Davis won the 100 in 12.5 and the long jump (17-3) for Santa Ana Valley (3-0 in league). Amber Hebert (200, triple jump), Carina Martinez (shotput, discus) and Ebony Demyers (300 hurdles, high jump) also won two events each for the host Falcons.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 77, Newport Harbor 59--Michelle Sanford won the long jump (18-0) and triple jump (37-9 3/4) for the host Warriors (3-0).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 87, Trabuco Hills 49--Mission Viejo’s Dana Bethel won the 100 hurdles (14.7), high jump (5-0) and long jump (17-2).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 85, Huntington Beach 45--Annie Briggs won the 200 in 25.4 and the 400 in 58.7 and Julie Handy won the 100 (12.5) and the 300 hurdles (46.8) for Esperanza (3-0 in league).
